Newsletter – January - March 2024

Happy New Year to all our members – we hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and that 2024 proves to be a good gardening year when you can make the most of being in your garden.

Meetings

Our next meeting on Wednesday 7th February is our AGM, please see attached agenda. Afterwards Richard Snell will be talking about ‘Pruning’, an essential part of plant care yet poses many questions of what to do and when so we can get the best from our trees and shrubs. The competition is 'A Vase of Coloured Wood Stems’ (could be stems from your winter trimming).

At our meeting on Wednesday 6th March, we have Tracy Snell, Garden Manager of RHS Bridgewater telling us all about the making of the Royal Horticultural Society’s fifth public display garden. As a landscape architect, Tracy has brought her knowledge and skill into transforming this 154-acre estate, the largest gardening project undertaken in Europe. The competition for this month is ‘A pot of Spring Bulbs’.

There will be a seed swap at these meetings, so if you have any spare seeds, please bring them along. In preparation for our plant sale at our May meeting, if you are splitting any plants over the next few weeks, we would very much appreciate you potting up a cutting to bring along in May.

Spring Show

The Spring Show is on Saturday 23rd March with staging from 8am to 10:45am. If you would like to enter exhibits in any of our shows, please ask for a schedule when you renew your membership. Alternatively the schedule is available on our website. If you have not entered before, do have a go, there are stewards on hand to help with staging and any queries you may have. Last year we had several members entering exhibits for the first time, and they all said how much fun it was. Our judges are delighted and complimentary that we have our seasonal shows. The hall always looks fabulous when set out with all your beautiful exhibits.

Trips

As yet the committee are deciding on trips for this year. Similar to last year we plan a trip to a more local garden and nursery within easy travelling distance and perhaps a garden visit further afield but possible within a day. If you have any ideas about a garden trip, please see one of the committee, we are always pleased to hear your suggestions.

Memberships

Subscriptions are now due for 2024. The attached membership form gives details of how to pay your subscription and collect your membership card and programme.

Your society needs you

We are fortunate to have such an enthusiastic, hard working committee but we do need help in many ways. If you are able to come along earlier to help set up, sell raffle tickets, or tidy away after meetings or shows your help would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

With best wishes for 2024,

Susan Reading
