NEWSLETTER JANUARY/MARCH 2020 Dear Members,
We hope you had a great Christmas and New Year, and that those of you who came to our Christmas festivity last month enjoyed the
excellent entertainment and great company. As we look ahead to 2020, here’s hoping for a good gardening year (and a little less rain!).
Membership Subscriptions are due for renewal in February. As has been
reported at the last few AGMs, since the closure of the hut in 2015, our financial reserves have been diminishing year on year, and the committee has had to take the difficult decision to raise the
membership fees. A single membership will now be £10 and the joint membership is £15. We are also introducing a small charge for visitors of £2 per meeting. Without this increase, the society faces
the prospect of having to close within the next three to four years. I’m sure you’ll agree that the fee still represents excellent value for money.
You can fill in the slip at the end of this letter and either bring it with you to the February meeting or send it with payment and a
stamped addressed envelope to Debbie Corbett, who will then send you your membership card and programme.
Programme 2020 We have an interesting and varied programme lined up for this year. Our next meeting on Wednesday, 5 February, is our AGM, followed by
a talk by Garth Manning on ‘The Gardens of Kyoto: 1,000 years of Japanese garden design’, and the competition is ‘A Plant from Christmas’. We’d be very interested to hear your feedback on the talks
and whether you’d like us to arrange speakers on a particular topic that we’ve not had before. And if you can recommend any interesting speakers that you might have heard at other events, do please
let us know.
Spring Show This year’s Spring
Show will be held on Saturday, 28 March. Staging will be on the Saturday morning from 8.00 am to 11.00 am and you can find all the details in the schedule that you will be given when you renew your
membership. If you’ve not entered before, do have a go – it’s not difficult and there’ll be stewards on hand to help with staging and any queries you may have.
Trips This year we’re planning a trip to the Southport Flower Show on Thursday, 20 August, which promises to be a great day out. If you are interested in coming along, contact Rita
Critchley on 01244 674578 for more information.
Your society needs you We still need new committee members. If you’d like to help us by joining the committee, we would really appreciate your help.
You can take on as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and if you’d like to come along to the next committee meeting to see what it involves, you’d be very welcome. Or, if the idea of
joining is not your thing, then we’d also be grateful for your help in an informal capacity – for example, by helping to set up the hall or making tea at the meetings, or helping out at the shows.
Please get in touch with any of the committee members for more information.
On behalf of the committee, I’d
like to wish you a Happy New Year, and a successful year in the garden. Helen Gardiner
